Our Manifesto

November 28, 1939

To the Trustees of the United Presbyterian Church.
Inman Square, Cambridge, Mass.

The purpose of my Sunday afternoon musical service on November 26th was twofold: First; In the hopes of raising some extra money for the church treasury, and second; to bring to the men, women, and children of our church, through an hour of musical worship, a deeper and more appreciative understanding of this wonderful art called music.

I was very disappointed to see so few of our own congregation present after weeks of planning and practicing. I purposefully asked Miss. Crossley to be my soloist because I felt our members enjoyed her singing. She was only too willing to give her services and if it had not been for her friends and mine the church would have been quite empty.

I have planned an afternoon service with the Children's Choir for December 17th. I am not sending out any programs to my friends regarding this concert, so it would be entirely up to our own church members to respond and cooperate with the children and myself.

I also hoped to have two more Vesper services after the Christmas holidays, but unless the people are willing to respond and appreciate my efforts, for the above to reasons, these afternoon services will be forgotten.

Certainly the members of the church should be interested in what is going on in their own church, and for this reason alone, I should think they would be interested enough to come and bring their friends to these afternoon musicals and other entertainments in the church,

Very Sincerely,

Burton A. Cleaves
